Hello I’ve had my male rat for about a year and a half and I’ve noticed his fur start to go a funny orange/ red colour he has white fur so it’s easy to see the colours are dull and not all over the patches of buck grease are on his back area. There also seems to be small clumps of it in his fur I just wanted to make sure it’s buck grease and nothing serious wrong with his health I’m pretty sure it’s not mites or anything like that as he gets checked regularly I’ll attach some pictures ( the pictures aren’t great sorry) thanks

Has he been grooming himself regularly? My old boy Pinky used to get oily like that after he got too old to reach his back to clean. I rubbed some cocoanut oil on him to help get it off, but Pinky was hairless, so idk how much that’ll help a little guy with hair.

He does still clean regularly but it could be that he can’t get that spot on his back so you have any tips on helping him clean it off

Does he have other rats in with him? Maybe if they aren’t helping him out with grooming you can encourage that by rubbing cocoanut oil on him anyways (not a lot tho). It’ll make them lick it off and hopefully get the excess buck-sweat.

He’s on his own currently my other rat recently passed away however I do have two new male rats that I’m slowly introducing to him once there in together I’ll defiantly try this thanks

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. Does he seem like he’s missing his friend? :(

He’s doing well on his own at the moment and has lots of time out of his cage I’m slowly introducing him to my new rats I’m hoping I will be able to house them together eventually if everything goes right

Good job! I wish you the best. Introductions are always tricky but well worth it in the end. I've got my 1yr old female and slowly introducing them to two new babies. It's slow and arduous.
