Hi- i was just curious if anyone makes their rats mixes for their food. I would obviously still feed them oxbow but wanted to see if anyone does it.

Mixes are not good for rats
but in addition to a good quality block people do feed a variety of daily vegs, and occasional treats such as cooked grains, berries, a piece of fruit, a few seeds etc

There is some good info on nutrition, diet, forbidden foods, etc in our Reference Thread https://www.ratshackforum.com/threads/reference-thread-read-only.35894/
you might want to check it out

I used to do homemade mixes because I thought they were healthier - no shame in admitting it
I threw a bunch of healthy things that rats require in their diets into a bowl and mixed it, because I didn't like all the preservatives that store bought rat food contained.
Problem with this is that rats will pick and choose what they want to eat, which can leave to nutrient deficiencies.
Turns out a 20lb bag of oxbow is $40 on chewy.com so I ordered it and now I am currently weaning my rats off of the homemade mix and on to oxbow! (about 1/4 homemade mix and 3/4 oxbow, soon I'll only give oxbow and healthy treats).
I also give my girls fresh veggies about 5 times a week!

The only mix you should be doing is whole foods like oats, raw sunflower seeds, raw pumpkin seeds, millet, bulgur, farro...stuff like that but making sure that the rats' main food is a completely formulated rat block.

I totally recommend watching emiology on YouTube she has a video about how she makes her rat food! I absolutely love the mix she makes if you live in the us like I do she says she uses the banana brunch mix but it is impossible to find in us so I use the tiny friends farm remmie the rat food as the base! I love mixes I use 1/8 cup per rat. I also follow with treats and veggies 3 times a week which consists of a base: spring mix, romaine, spinach. Fruits: banana, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, and veggies: tomato, bell pepper, cucumber and much more I also like to add pasta, eggs, oatmeal and other things! My rats are very healthy and are doing great on this diet!
