Hi everyone! I’m a first time rat mommy and have two girls who are just over three months old. Opal and Ruby are the sweetest fluff balls I could ever ask for. I am also a preschool teacher and they are the class pets. They come home with me just about every day to rest and have play time. As I’m writing this we are having play time and Ruby as usual is jumping on top of my head over and over as I take her off each time. Looking forward to getting advice, hear that the crazy things my rats (mostly Ruby) do are normal (hopefully), and have somewhere to talk about my rats as if they are my children without people thinking I’m crazy. Looking forward to meeting everyone and future chats.

Hi! I would love to see pictures of your little girls! And yes, rats do ridiculous things alllll the time. Even as a veteran with rats, I have to say I still get shocked by the dorky things I find them doing.

Omg I have one, skittle, that I'm sure has springs for legs! If I bring them into the bathroom with me, he will jump up in my lap repeatedly, even if I remove him and put him way away from me. Rats are such nuts! There is also a forum on here about "you know you own rats when" or something like that. It's many pages long, but had me in tears many times! Welcome to the forum!

Really happy you've discovered what a joy they are! one of my favorite things is when i 'get it' when one of them is trying to communicate something to me. usually happens when i'm distracted and force myself to be present and pay attention to the little one. they are so intelligent and communicative -

I agree! And SO EXPRESSIVE! They have a unique way of communicating their wants, needs, and love with their humans. You just have to pay attention to their body language, and facial expressions (yes, they have different expressions) and kind of put it together, and in no time you're able to decode their language. And if you're REALLY lucky, maybe even communicate on a different level. ;)

Thanks for the warm welcome. I don't have many pictures of them (I know I need to get some) but here are a couple. The hand is one of my preschoolers from work (they are also class pets)

Omg how freaking cute!! You even got them a great cage! I'm sure those babies are living it up, and enjoying all the attention from everyone.

Yeah, they have a DCN at my house and a single critter nation at school. They are beyond spoiled. I got lucky and found the cages used and paid under $130 for them combined. They area adorable.. though I'm a bit bias.
