Hello! I was wondering if 7/8 of an inch or even 1 inch would be too wide for male rats? I don't know if they'll be fully grown when I get them.
At what age are rats fully grown?
I've heard 1'' is too wide and I've heard 1/2 isn't
Thank you!

I've also heard that 1'' is the max.
I'm planning on getting either a feisty ferret cage or if I'm able to a double ferret nation (second hand)

Try to get a critter nation. It is the same as the ferret nation but has small bar spacing for rats.

Large adult boys can live in a cage with 1 inch bar spacing, but you would need to cover the outside of the cage with hardware cloth imo to keep small predators that can get into homes and apartments out of the cage. (I know of pet rats that were ripped apart in their ferret nation cage.)

Since you are researching rats, please read our Reference Thread https://www.ratshackforum.com/threads/reference-thread-read-only.35894/ in addition to checking out the other sections of the forum

Thank you so much! Would a feisty ferret cage work? If not I'll happily get the Critter Nation :)

A feisty ferret would work, but something to think about, the pans are harder to clean, or get out completely. If you get a feisty ferret, or ferret nation, you'll need to get something like choroplast to cover the bottom wire. Rat feet can get stuck in it, breaking them, or seriously injuring them. The critter nation is a full pan on the bottom.

There was an awful pic on Instagram that my daughter showed me a few months ago, where a girl gave her rat a treat through the bars, and her rat got too excited, and pushed it's head a little too far through the bars, and it popped it's eye out. Gruesome I know, but it CAN happen....
