Ariel was born to young parents whose owner never bothered to separate them. Her young mama overgroomed all the babies - with some missing toes, most of their tails, and/or most of a foot. Ariel was missing part of her tail but it never slowed her down.

Ariel, her siblings and her daddy came to live with me in December 2016 as they were going as free snake food, Their owner refused to let me have their mama or their younger siblings as Ariel's mama had back to back litters.

Ariel was a wonderful little girl, active, full of energy, always up for adventure. Ariel was a little escape artist, getting out of the playpen and exploring. She was a wonderful, kind, gentle girl who loved everyone, especially her family and friends.

A few months ago Ariel developed hind end degeneration and then started showing signs of pt. Her pt symptoms slowly progressed despite medications. Although she was still active, alert, and grooming herself, yesterday afternoon Ariel became unable to swallow food when syringe fed. I called her vet about bringing her in to be put to sleep but although she was unable to swallow food, they refused to humanely euthanize her because they were booked up. I gave Ariel sub-Q fluids so she would not become dehydrated. During the night Ariel had several seizures and at time her breathing sounded very congested. I waited until morning to contact a vet clinic that is open on Saturday as I have little money.

Ariel was humanely put to sleep at the vet's this morning to prevent further suffering.

It hurts so much and I miss her horribly.
I don't know which is worse ........ the pain and grief I feel over her death,
or my feelings about being charged the insane fee of $385 to have Ariel put to sleep

I'm so so sorry! She's much better now, and I'm sure that was no way for either of you to live. *hugs*

I'm so sorry for your loss, SQ. Ariel was well-loved and she's now happy and healthy.

It sometimes baffles me how some vets can charge upwards of $400 to euthanize our beloved ones. Did you opt to have her cremated?

IDid you opt to have her cremated?

No, vets make profits of $150 or more on each cremation just for being a third party between the pet owner and the crematorium, which makes the cost unaffordable.

I bring my ratties' bodies home so that their cagemates can sniff them and say goodbye - this is very important.

Then I wrap their bodies in fleece and put them in sealed plastic containers with a paper giving each name and dates and keep them in the freezer. Once a year I make arrangements with a local pet crematorium to do a private cremation of all my deceased ratties and I have their ashes returned to me.

That's what I do with my rats who have passed away as well. I like to cremate groups together as well. To have Gideon euthanized and then cremated would've brought an $80 bill up to around $300, so I understand.
