Hi all!
My rat Sherlock, 7 months old, has been treated with Kitten Revolution twice (one drop from applicator tube). The first time I treated him was April 26th and when his symptoms of mites returned, I treated him again yesterday. So almost two months apart.

I had also dosed my other two boys in April since they had scabs from mites, but I didn't treat them again because they seem fine.

However, Sherlock seems wobbly and unsteady on his feet today. He is eating and moving around, but he just seems to sway and fall over on his side more than normal.

Is this a side effect from the Revolution? Now that I think about it, he was unsteady like this a few weeks ago and might have been right after I dosed him with the Revolution the first time... It went away after a day or so before.

I'm a worried rat mama :( Definitely looking into a different preventative in the future...

Noticed his ear is all red... More red than the other side and it's the side he's wobbling toward. Ear infection possibly and unrelated to the Revolution treatment?
Will amoxicillin work for an ear infection? I have fishmox I used to treat them for an URI when they were younger...

Definitely sounds like inner ear infection for sure. As for your recurring mite infestations...do you use paper or wood-based beddings? If so you might need to freeze them for 48 hours before using it. This will kill any stowaways

Hi, thanks so much for your response! I use Aspen. I was freezing the bedding but I read that a regular home freezers don't get cold enough. Was wondering about baking the wood bedding instead?
I'll definitely start him on fishmox and see if it clears up. Thanks!

Or if you know anyone who has leftover clavamox in their medicine cabinet.....

personally I would suggest clavamox from a good vet with the knowledge and experience to treat rats
Thanks! I have an appointment on Tues calling around and seeing if I can get anything sooner. Shame it's the weekend. :/ Right now I'm giving him infant ibuprofen (Motrin) to help with pain and inflammation and amoxi. He's probably gonna need some combo of antibiotics though.
Any other suggestions of what I could do if I do have to indeed wait until Tues?
His appetite is 100% normal, clear eyes, energetic. Just slightly wobbly and slight head tilt.

I would see your vet on Monday. He might give ear drops as well as a specific oral antibiotic. And a good ole shot in the butt of the antibiotic that he gets prescribed is always a good idea with serious infections such as an inner ear affliction.

I can't think of anything else until you see a vet.
If you read the link on inner ear infections I previously posted, then you are aware of the recommended oral antibiotics, and your vet may want to change the anti-inflammatory to Metacam or a steroid such as prednisone and dex
Good luck and I hope Sherlock continues to feel ok and improves

He's looking soooo much better today. Before, he had a slight head tilt and couldn't walk in a straight line--he would just circle to the side of his infected ear. Now he's walking straight, greeting me at the front of the cage again, and getting much more of his personality back. He still has a slight head tilt, but I've read that sometimes that doesn't go away.
Still going to keep my vet appointment for now. It would probably be best to switch him over to the augmentin (clavamox) rather than just amoxi.
