I would suggest starting the baytril as well. It won't hurt especially since you will be adding an antibiotic to the baytril later on to make a more effective combo.

I have already started him with the baytril yesterday (the day I got the meds) so there is no need to worry about that. I wouldn't have deprived him from his meds until someone answered me, that's absurd. Thank you for your advice and input on everything that I needed to know.

Thank you. All replies are appreciated,

the recommended time is 4 weeks on antibiotics
myself and some others have found that our rats needed 6 weeks

you need to start him on the baytril as soon as possible
If the info lilsoaz68 suggested above used an incorrect assumption, hopefully she will soon reply to your questions

good luck

Okay, that makes sense that the owner would want to put their rat on the medication longer to make sure that they are okay.

I have already stated him in his baytril medication the day I got it so there is no need to worry about that. At the moment, I haven't seen much of a change in his breathing but that is to be expected I guess since he just started taking them so he wouldn't be showing progress yet.

Thank you. All replies are appreciated.

UPDATE:
Today i went to give him his medication and nothing came out. There was a little bit left but i was unable to get the cap off to retrieve it. He started taking his medication on Tuesday, January 29th, 2019 and today is Friday, February 8th, 2019 so he has been taking it for 9 whole days and at night on the 29th.

I have noticed that his breathing has gotten better. I know that his symptoms can come back but I was still wondering if I should still try to talk to his vet about giving him the baytril/azithromycin combonation for the 6 weeks? I think that his vet gets back from vacation either today or tomorrow. If she gets back tomorrow is it okay that he goes a day without the meds? I wasnt able to give it to him this morning as I said previously that I ran out.

That is all for now.

Thank you. All replies are appreciated.

no, it is not ok, he needs his meds today ….. 9 days may be enough to reduce his symptoms but he needs at least 4 to 6 weeks to get well …. so please contact the vet asap

There is nothing I can do until his vet gets back from vacation. I know that the 9 days is only enough to reduce his symptoms. When his vet is back I will talk to her about getting him the baytril/azithormycin combination for the 6 weeks.

Actually the vet that gave you the meds to last until your vet got back (sorry if I misunderstood) should have given you additional meds if contacted since the meds they gave you did not last until the other vet returned and you were able to contact that vet

UPDATE:
I was able to get the cap off and there was enough left to give him his night time dose. Hopefully his vet gets back tomorrow and I can go in and talk to her about further medication. We were told that she will contact us when she gets back.

Thank you. All replies are appreciated.

Does anyone know how much it will cost to get the baytril and azithromycin for the 6 weeks? Just so I know an estimate in advance.

His vet hasn't contacted us yet so he sadly has gone a day without medication. There is nothin I can do in the mean time until his vet is available and can give us a prescription and extra medication. The situation isn't ideal and it sucks but I can't really do anything about it.

Still haven't gotten a call from the vet. I hate to admit this but the vet here isn't the greatest. I have heard a lot of complaints about them but it is all I have access to

can you just show up and explain that your rats require more medication?
I would think that they should be able to give you enough of the medication the ratties were on to last until the vet has time to speak with you

I believe that you have to call ahead of time so that a worker can make time to meet with you.

I’ve cured upper respiratory infections I four rats with this method and a lower respiratory and a microplasmic infection using other but similar treatments. When my rats get this I open a 500 mg Amoxicillin Trihydrate pill and mix it with 7 ml of unsweetened applesauce or jam them give them a drip or two twice a day, then continue for two or three days after the sniffles. They all did awesome afterwards and never had to take them to the vet for that reason :) I’ll try to give a link to a vid that helped aswell

Thank you for your suggestion. I think that I will try to talk to the vet and request the baytril and azithromycin pairing for the 6 weeks since I have been suggested that from multiple people. I hope that it isn’t too expensive as I am a little tight on cash at the moment. I started hearing my other rat sneeze, should I treat him with the same medication also just in case? I hate that pets have to be so expensive but what are you gonna do, hey?

Thank you. All replies are appreciated.

UPDATE:
I have good news and I have bad news.

Good news is, we were able to call in and go to the vets clinic and we were given enough medication for 42 days (6 weeks). He is to be given 0.18mL twice a day orally for 42 days. I was given a 9mL baytril and 9mL strawberry syrup mix. One of the workers did the math and apparently we should have enough for 45 days.

Bad news is, his vet was on lunch break when we got there so I was unable to talk to her about getting a prescription for azithromycin. We were told that she will call us once she gets back and has had time to process the request. Another bad thing about the situation is that if she doesn’t phone back today, I won’t be able to get the medication for a few weeks as I don’t have a way to get them.

Here is to hoping.

Thank you. All replies are appreciated.

If she does not phone back soon, you phone and keep phoning.
If she gets a message from you asking for a prescription with multiple refills for the azithromycin, then hopefully she will do that and then the staff can just tell you. Make sure she is aware that it needs to happen today

I may have a way to get the medication after today since she hasn't contacted me yet today. I have someone who can get the prescription for me from the pharmacy.

EDIT:
That is IF she calls and approves the prescription. She just never seems to call me back.

The vet here sucks, I'm just saying. My boys' vet never calls us back when we need something, we always have to call them and push it. I have been giving my boy his baytril mixture, and the vet still hasn't called us back to approve the prescription for azithromycin. A vet should know that it is important that an animal in need gets their medication as soon as possible yet she never takes action and calls back. Starting to get annoyed.

Thank you. All replies are appreciated.

If it were me, I'd call every hour until I got a response. Sooner or later, they will get tired of it, and respond. That is frustrating when they don't seem to care as much as they should.....
