So my rats are have been taking medicine for over a month and a week now. A week ago they were on baytril but were getting worse again so they started on baytril plus doxy. I know that rats are supposed to get medication for 4 to 6 weeks. Ive been giving them baytril for 5 weeks and doxy for 1. Should I stop giving them baytril when it has been 6 weeks and keep on giving them doxy for a month/ 6 weeks? Or should I stop when I stop the baytril? Also they have gotten a lot better. One of them wouldn't even eat or drink or move. But now is way more playful and they both seem to be healthy but they will sneeze now and then, and if you get real close to them you can hear their nose making a whistling sound. I wonder if they are still sick or if its just their airways that are still clogged ? Im afraid that if I take them out of medication they will go downhill again.

One of my rats, Bidoof, is on baytril and doxy pretty much for life. We have tappered down to a maint. dose. Everytime I finished the course of antibiotics withing 2 days of stopping he would go back to sneezing and a cough that sounded like croup. So my vet decided it was best to just keep him on a maintenece dose of antibiotics. I also give him bene-bac paste (not at the same time as antibiotic) which is a probiotic since continuous abx can be hard on their gut.

Thank you! I fear that that is probably my situation too. I dont know anything about that paste. Will talk about that with my vet next time I go there. May I ask from what to what hours does your boy take his meds? One of my vets said 12 h break between meds but another vet told me something different. Just to make sure.

They need to be on baytril + doxy for 4 to 6 weeks so do not stop the baytril

Every 12 hours is the best way to do it for both doxy and baytril, however my lifestyle doesnt allow for this so my vet approved giving it once a day at double the strength. For example if they get 1mg doxy every 12 hours instead I give 2mg doxy once daily. I agree with the others, doing a combo of doxy and baytril together has worked the best and I give them at the same time as eachother.
