Hi all,
I joined this forum in hopes of getting help with with a doxycycline dose. I have a vet appointment Saturday for my two new weaned rats who have been constantly sneezing and sounding mucousy (appears to still be in sinuses). They appear worse overnight, still eat etc, but I want to make sure they make it to the vet appointment Saturday am.

I haven't owned rats in about 6 years and I guess tetracycline is no longer available in my state (though I do have a friend who has leftover oxytetracycline). I also have tylan 200 but it's injectable only.

Anywho, I have this doxycycline for fish. It's 250 mg in each packet. Does anyone know how much of this I would have to use for a 42.7 gram rat and a 57 gram rat and how should I administer this?

Unfortunately Doxy is contraindicated with baby rats, amoxicillin or zithromax or even Clavamox is what you need. I can work out doses with doxy if you cannot find any other pediatric friendly antibiotics but doxy is not a great antibiotic to give on its own. Ask.around for the other 3, see if anyone has a tablet or 2 in their own med cupboard.

I realize this, but I cannot find anything else and the amoxi I ordered won't be here until Monday. I need her to make it until Saturday to be seen by the vet which is looking unlikely.

OK bit confused, the packets of doxy are usually 100 mg, as are the capsules etc. There are 250 mg tablets but not packets. Can you double check before mixing and dosing?

IF you have 100 mg packets - mix 1 packet into 5 ml's of fluid (say 1 ml of hot water til dissolved then 4 ml of syrup) to give you 20 mg/ml doxy. Babies doses would be 0.02 ml and 0.03 ml twice a day

IF you have 250 mg doxy, mix with 12 mls of fluid (4 ml of hot water, 8 ml of syrup) giving you 21 mg/ml doxy. The doses would be 0.02 and 0.03 ml twice a day.

Hi,
Ok here is what the box says. It says each packet contains 250 mg doxycycline . I actually weighed the powder on my gram scale (our of the packet) and there is 2 grams of powder in each packet.

Thank you for all of your help. I used the 250 doxy dose and they both are a bit better after 2 days. I brought them to the vet today and he confirmed it was mostly sinuses, although the one patchie/naked girl seems to have struggled more to breath. They just got out on sulfa/tmz (which is usually just crap) but he was concerned about the doxy with them being so young.

I have amoxicillin coming in Monday anyway. One odd thing is that the nakie girl seems to have been having a hard time breathing before I started the doxy so I used albuterol inhaler and it perked her up and helped until the doxy kicked in. Now it seems the rex girl is the one struggling...could this be a virus?
 
Thanks again for responding. How do I attach a video? I tried to attach the fish doxy picture before but it comes up as a picture of a rat. I really thought sulfa tmz was safe even the vet said the doxy wasn't goood. Do you know why the sulfa tmz isn't safe. Is it like the tetracyclines?

I haven't had to use the inhaler on either one at all today. yesterday the bigger one was honking and I used the inhaler and it went away. now they are breathing fine and just sound congested again in their sinuses. they are are gaining weight. I weigh them every day.

If I can't figure out the attachments maybe I can just sign up for YouTube and use that.

The safety of trimethoprim / sulfa during pregnancy is not clearly established. Reports indicate teratogenicity (cleft palate) in studies with rats. Therefore it is recommended that it not be given to pregnant rats.

Trimethoprim / sulfa is metabolized by the liver, and excreted during glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Because sulfonamides are found to be excreted in breast milk it is advised to avoid giving trimethoprim / sulfa in rats that are nursing.
 
ok...I hope this works. Can you hear her? Zee is older Scribbles is younger. They haven't honked or sounded that bad at all today.
