I wanted to update you on Luke's foray into the world of herbs. When we first
started noticing pituitary tumor symptoms, Luke was immediately put on
prednisone twice a day. Symptoms included confusion in the cage and out, and
problems holding his food with both paws. Once put on the pred 2x daily the
symptoms mostly receded. After being on pred 2x a day for 5 days we attempted
to wean him off of the pred as the vet thought it could be a spinal injury
causing swelling, so we went to once a day for 5 days. Into the 2nd day of his
once daily pred dose the confusion returned. He was put back on pred twice a
day and the vet put an order in for herbs for hime.

Total time on prednisone twice a day was two weeks, at which point we received
the herbs and started him on the herbs twice a day while also keeping him on
the prednisone twice a day. After being on both for 7 days, we reduced the
prednisone to once a day for 7 days without any confusion returning. He is now
down to prednisone once every other day for about a week and a half, we are 1/3
of the way thru that dosing time and the only thing we see is that he still
does not fully use both paws to hold food, but he CAN. Off and on he will still
put the right foot down while eating, but we have seen him hold food for a
length of time while eating. This is the asme way he acted with holding his
food when he was on pred twice a day.

The herbs are given twice a day. He gets a sprinkle of each herb mixed with
either a syringe of ensure of some baby cereal, which he has learned is his
treat. He eagerly awaits it in the mornings. We will be continuing with the
herbal treatment as it is probably better for his liver (and overall health)
than the pred, and much cheaper.

The names of the 2 herbal mixtures:

1. "Stasis in mansion of mind" - used to treat brain tumors
2. "Max's Formula" - used to treat other tumors found system wide

These herbal mixtures cannot be purchased over the counter. My vets have been certified for holistic/acupuncture treatment for animals along with the normal DVM documentation. They purchase the herbs from an herbal pharmacy that deals strictly with vets.

These are exciting and wonderful results!! I hope your boy continues to improve. When it is his time to go, a necropsy would be beneficial to see exactly what happened to the pituitary tumor.

Yah I am really excited about it! I'd rather give him something herbal that is less likely to cause liver and other related problems that accompany prednisone!

I'm trying to find a decent holistic vet in the area... love that you've got one also treating rats.

I hope Luke keeps seeing good results!

I ran this past our vet today since they are very into holistic treatments and our boys are on a few at this time and he said this is what they would use should we have to come down the PT path again. The use Max's Formula, but would have to get the herbs for the other.
