We are unfortunate enough to know someone who is totally incompetent at pet care, but continues getting pets, especially rats. Now, because of her financial state, she only has two rats. Still two too many for her.
Because she has no interest in educating herself, she frequently comes to my housemate for advice, which often leads to us stepping in to care for her pets.
Recently, one of her boys had "sores" all over and needed a vet visit. They were just scabs from mites, but we convinced her to let us take both that boy and his brother to the vet. After a few heated exchanges, my roommate politely reminded them that the lack jobs, a car, and a vet, all of which we have to spare. After a bit, we convinced them to allow us to keep the boys. They're enjoying actual rat food, cages big enough for a growing little guy to run around in, and access to vets when the need them.
