A co-worker brought a disturbing case to me this week and as I gather information the plot gets worse.
First bit of information was the most shocking. Her friends brother, we'll call him Jay, had acquired two female rats from a home he visited a week back. They had been unsuccessfully"frozen" alive, yes you read that right, they were freezing live rats and failing at it! So these poor rats were freezing cold to near death and feeling every moment.
Then it turns out these were just two of 15 rats that failed to freeze for this person. Another friend took the other 13.
This is where the plot deepens and gets sadder. The two he took were pregnant so not only did they suffer their unborn babies did too. Momma #1 gave birth to 9 babies approx 2 weeks ago, mere days after her near frozen ordeal....Momma #2 gave birth this week to 9 as well. All babies miraculously survived!
I finally got in touch with the Jay who rescued the two Momma's and he gave me more info and is trying to get more yet to bring this horrible person down!
He had all these rats in 1 cage. At least 15! So if there are other females with the other gentleman who took the other 13 I bet there are more babies expected.
I can take some of the male babies when the time comes but I cannot take all 18! I am reaching out to get help in rehoming and rescuing these babies as Jay cannot keep more then 3 pets total in his home.
They are in London Ontario. I am working on more info, possible anonymously message on fb!

Ugh the stupidity of people will never cease to amaze me! Those poor rats. I'm glad they are out of there. Does the person who tried to freeze them still have any rats?

Oh my :( poor poor ratties. How much information could you get on these babies? It may not be too hard finding homes. Unless they're the unwanted colours (pews, black berks, back hoodeds and stamdard ear) they're always difficult to find homes for in my experience. How old are they? I'll try my best to help:)

I'm working on getting photos. May go see them myself this week. Get a better idea of genders, colors etc.
One group is approx 2 weeks one is mere days old at this point. I don't know if there are other rats still in the home I am awaiting further information from the initial rescuer Jay. He's checking in with the guy who took the 13 others. This person let them go because as many feeder breeders do, he over bred and has too many thats why he was freezing them.

This is so sad :( I'm a fairly new rat mommy. I have three girls, I am more then willing to take on one more if this helps at all. I am also in Sarnia and you can message me at my email anytime. I am also looking to connect with other reputable rat owners. My kids and I adore our girls and want to know and do as much as possible for them.

I will keep you in mind. I also have a female on watch thats most likely pregnant. She's homed in Sombra with my foster Jess. So we may have even more babies...sigh

If you private message me contact details I will keep you updated.

If you have any questions I work at the Lakeshore Pet Valu. Come see me anytime just ask for the rat lady :)

Ok sounds good I'll send you my info. I wondered if you were the same girl I was told about ;) pet valu at the mall told me there was a girl who does rescues from your location.

PICTURESS! They are a bit blurry but these wee babes are cuuuute!

We're still working on genders and more info on the a**hole who did this to these beauties. As well as the other rescuer, if he has any females, high chance he'll soon be overrun with babies too!
Momma's have amazing temperaments and allow their babies to be handled and they seek human contact so thats amazing with what they've been through!

Ok so we have 19 babies!
I have a few pictures of most of the babes. Looks like a mix of fawn and agouti hoods, berks, barebacks and mis-marked.
A few ruby & pink eyed babes.

There are some doubles of some babies. I have to organize the pictures better and match to their under belly photos for gender!
Also we have an address for the perpetrators of the cruel live freezing attempt. Will be calling the SPCA tomorrow!

Would love to help! I hope everything goes well for these ratties there toooo cute

Lots of help has come forward thankfully. If you wish to help let me know in what way. I will likely need transport help. Maybe a few more homes to foster/rescue as well as forever homes.
I am planning to see them for myself next week and confirm gender. I for sure see 9 males and 8 females. 2 were too blurry to see their pictures I guess they're getting busy and a handful now. They were born Feb 6/7 overnight.

I'm still trying to clarify that. But I believe it was 2 litters born the same days between the 6th & 7th of this month. At first I was sure he said 9 babies. Then it was 18 and then he realized two were so similar he mistook them for the same baby and there are actually 19!

His original rat has Mycoplasma...now I have not dealt with that but the mom's were caged with that rat until the day they gave birth. He estimates 10 days with the myco positive rat. She is being treated with meds. Are the babies severely at risk or definitely carry it now or are they likely OK?

I am happy to say that all the babies have a place to stay if at least temporarily. The rescue in Strathroy has lots of room and I have my eye on at least 4 or 5 of the boys. If not all :) And 2 baby girls have a forever home already :) with friends of mine who lost one of their oldies last month.
MINNIEFLOWER I recall you said you would help some females if needed. Do you WANT some baby girls? If not the Strathroy rescue has 2 secure rooms so can take either gender.

Sterling, all pet rats have myco, so you HAVE dealt with is...most respiratory infections are myco flareups. But myco is transmitted to the babies during the birthing process and going through the birth canal.

Ooh ok. See still learning! Thanks!
I kind of thought I remember that all rats carry it but some never have a flare up. But I didn't want to be presumptuous when I was unsure! Thanks Lilspaz
