Saint Nicholas Mouse Rescue is named after a beloved mouse Nicholas, and also honors Saint Nicholas as the patron saint of the rescue. Our rescue has expanded to rats (and other rodents) as the need has been greater, especially for rats. We transfer rats to the rescue from animal control which are sick, unadoptable, pregnant, old, or their time has expired and euthanasia is imminent. We post all animal control rats to Petfinder, as well as any young rats available for adoption through our rescue. We have been involved with rehoming rats from a collector/ hoarder situation locally. Our expenses run to $10,000.00 per year (mainly veterinarian bills) and our public support through adoption fees and donations are about $100.00 so far this year. Our personal income supports the rescue, but our expenses cannot be sustained for long. Our recent 501(c)(3) status will help defray some expenses. We are actively seeking public support. To help our rescue, we attend adoption events connected with Friends of Animal Control. Our current project is selling a children' s book: Get That Rat!, written by Director Lucinda Rideout, available from our website. Lucinda also writes for Pet Tails magazine and It's a Rats World, promoting care for rats and other companion rodents.

You can help support Saint Nicholas Mouse Rescue of Virginia Beach by buying the book, Get That Rat!, by Lucinda Rideout. The price of the book is either FREE with membership of $15 or a $10 donation. The book is allegorical with the rats talking. It is illustrated by Morgan Ringer, and the age level is elementary 4th grade to adult.
DO THE RIGHT THING LITTLE RAT! But that's hard to do when you are only four weeks old! GET THAT RAT! is based on a true story about a little rat named Marley who escaped and ran free throughout the house for several weeks.
