Well it seems to me that what we previously accepted as "normal old rat behavior" is usually an outcome of declining kidney function. My almost-2 year old rat (with acute kidney failure) started popcorning around like a ratlet after his first dose of enalapril (kidney med)? Since this was part of a discussion with Dr. Munn (Greenwood Clinic, Toronto), I also have to suggest her as the most experienced with this condition. When I asked about diet, she recommended waiting for urinalysis results to see what his needs were.

Here are a couple articles I came upon today when shopping for Moh, and I will continue to post them here as I find them. Please also share your diet information here.

Diet?
Sam has been with me about 13 months, rescued as an adult "vicious biter" going as free snake food with his brother.
(Sam has been a big disappointment as he is a sweet boy who has never dreamed of biting anyone)

Sam is now having difficulty with his hind end and I believe that was mentioned as a possible symptom of kidney disease.
But he gets Harlan Tek 2014 http://www.envigo.com/resources/data-sheets/2014-datasheet-0915...pdf , daily veg, some fruit as a treat along with organic speerville 12 grain cooked cereal ................... guess no more cooked cereal or bananas :(

That was actually a different rat Jo, and I don't remember the exact suggestions but Doc M said she was seeing a whole lot of kidney disease she previously thought respiratory. Now she recommends urinalysis.

Although I'm a big Dr. Munn fan, Moh's vet is Dr. Cathy (Willowdale) , only because he got sick on Saturday night (don't they all?), and they are open. She seemed brighter than most, and deserved a chance .

SQ, ask your vet about a phosphate medication. After the addition of tums, Moh can have his favorite foods again --Moh-tmeal, Moh-gurt :)
