Update... and seeking aid for rescue situation. *warning* there are graphic photos.
It has been a while since we posted an update on the Rescue, and that's because we haven't been able to take in many rats, and there haven't been many adoptions either. The reason is that in November of 2015, we took in 21 rats from a situation that is currently still under investigation. We knew that these rats we rescued would be sick, scared, and most likely permanent residents of the Rat Rescue as they would be unadoptable expect to the most exceptional & experienced homes.
Including the long-term fosters/special needs rats we have in palliative care, we have a total of 6 rats booked for surgery between June 20 and July 6th!
Yesterday, we were contacted by a good friend, and fellow rat-rescue-er in Montreal who was alerted about a desperate situation. There are over 30 rats who were dumped outside to fend for themselves. They have been outside since May 25th. Our friend became aware of the situation last night and headed out armed with carriers, food and water and Camille (one of our directors) to try to catch and save those who still survived. They found out that an exterminator had already been called in, and about a dozen were taken. Someone reported seeing a couple arrive and also catch a few and walk away. Last night, Camille and our friend were able to catch 7 of the rats that remained. Early this morning, Camille was able to catch one more. They are planning to head out again later tonight.
If anyone in the Montreal area is able to lend a hand in the search for survivors, please message us and we will get you in touch with Camille. If you are like me, and stuck here in Ottawa or another city/province/country, but you would still like to help, please consider make a donation.
We hate to ask, but the rats who have been found are all in various states, some scratched, hungry and thirsty, others covered in infection, damaged eyes, huge abscesses and pregnant.
Every little bit helps. As we are a registered charity, we can provide Donation Receipts for any amount over $20.
