OK, they are not my rats
BUT couldn't find a "Rats in the News" section so crossposting this here.

This is the sad story of about two hundred (not one hundred as you will read in the articles) rats that were let loose by a popular picnic spot in Colebrook CT. When they were reported a few trigger happy heroes couldn't wait to have something to practice shooting at and rand right down there with their shotguns to exterminate them. These rats were friendly and would come right up to anyone offering a snack, so to do something like stalking them with shotguns is despicable! The shotgun idiots were able to shoot about 35 - 40 of the rats (according to the news article).
The evening of the shootings, the woman who had first reported them was furious and went with a couple of friends to rescue any that were still left. They found injured rats that they brought to the local vet, and were able to catch about 60 others throughout the night. They went to the local cat shelter, but someone on the committee for that shelter opposed the idea of keeping them, so that is where the Harmony House Rabbit Sanctuary has acquired them. I now have 30 adults, all young according to the person who let them go (I talked to him once...I have nothing nice to say so I won't say anything). I separated the sexes at once, but most of the females were already pregnant. At least 13 of the females have given birth to nice big pink piles of babies, so I'm guessing I have approximately 200 rats total now. I'm in serious need of help so please go to my website, click on the Colebrook Rat Project page, look at some pictures, and give some thought as to how you might be able to help me save these little ones. I need food, supplies, fosters, adopters, and donations of any kind to be able to continue. Pictures of the babies will be on the website this weekend so please come back and visit it again to see the progress. Many sincere thanks to all who are continuing to keep up with this story and trying to help...it may not be making the papers any more, but it is a long way from being over.
