Consult a vet.

Vet visits can cost a LOT, rats aren't cheap pets. I hope you're prepared for the inevitable bills, and I hope you can find a rat-knowledgeable vet (just because a vet will see a rat, doesn't mean they're rat-knowledgeable).

This is a GREAT point and something to watch out for.

I can't tell you how much time and money I spent on vets who see rats but know very very VERY little about them.

One even gave me the wrong concentration of antibiotics and didn't even label the bottle!

Now I have a great vet! Good luck on your search. I hope you will be able to find a good one.
