Best Friend Rodent Rescue (BFRR) in Kenmore, WA is in immediate need of
donations toward 17 emergency spays.

In the last few days, a hoarder dumped a huge number of rats at the door
of the Tacoma Humane Society. These vulnerable rats, including a lot of
tiny babies, were piled in cardboard boxes - photo here:

BFRR recently took in 80 rats from the much-publicized California
hoarder incident (as seen on the TV series "Hoarders").

BFRR has now taken in another 68 rats from this new Tacoma situation.

The new Tacoma group includes about 17 breeding age females. All of them
may have been with males, so this is a crisis! They could potentially
produce over 200 babies. So they must be spayed urgently.

Some spay money has been raised already, but much more will be needed. We
already have at least one exotics vet lined up to do some of the spays
at the greatly reduced rate of $55 per spay.

Anyone donating all (or most) of the price of a spay will be considered
first for adopting that rat.

If you can't afford the full spay price, donations in any amount are
desperately needed.

According to Joanne from BFRR:

"The first dump [at Tacoma HS] was last week - there were 20 boys, 2
of whom were euthanized immediately because they came in panicky and one
bit someone… Thank goodness the moms didn't start biting until
they arrived at our quarantine home yesterday, and got moved into their
cages, or I'm sure all of the babies and moms would have been
euthanized too!... I now have 68 new rats at my own quarantine home!
This includes 4 sets of babies. The oldest babies appear to be about 3
weeks. Then there are 17 young ladies, one of which is obviously
pregnant and all of which unfortunately could very likely be pregnant.
At this point in time, we cannot afford to spay all of those girls!"

If all 17 females have litters it could mean another 204+ babies. It
should also be noted that the 4 mom's who already have babies could
easily be pregnant again. In addition to the current influx, BFFR
already has 105 rats in rescue, plus a number of other species.

If you can possibly help out, they have a donation button on their
website here:

Or email Joanne at: [email protected]

Obviously much more help will be needed with this rescue: foster homes,
adopters, rat trains to other rescues, and donations of food and
supplies.

But right now the major concern is putting a lid on the population
explosion through emergency spays.

Please feel free to crosspost this information.

Update!

From the RatsPacNW email group:

The not so good news is that one of that one of the 17 girls gave birth
to 11 babies, bringing the total number of rats needing homes, from this
rescue alone, to 97... but the good news is, Best Friend Rodent Rescue
is only $130 short of the amount they need to spay the remaining 16 and
the appointments have all be booked with 2 different vets over the next
few days. If anyone was thinking of donating, but just hadn't got around
to it yet, please do help them reach their goal! Thank you so much to
everyone who has already helped out with a contribution. Much of the
money did come in in small amounts, which just goes to show that every
little bit really does help. We will keep everyone posted on the
progress of this rescue. Thanks again!

Thanks for posting the update. I actually went to do it earlier and couldn't even find my original post - LOL! The last I heard they had most of that last $130 as well!

This just in from the coordinator of Best Friend Rodent Rescue:

"As the dust starts to settle here, I can tell you that we have done a lot of counting and recounting! Altogether it is still 17 females we need to spay. We were able to get Dr. Karen Obegi to give us a bit of a deal, since our regular vet wasn't able to do them all soon enough, due to schedule conflicts. On Friday Dr. Obegi did 7 young girls, who are all healing nicely! This Monday, Dr. Obegi will do 6 more and Dr. Kamaka will do 4 spays. So far so good, all girls appear to be safe from giving birth over the weekend. A foster has already taken the newest set of 11 babies home and has promised to send me pictures on a daily basis.

With all the figures recalculated and tallied 5 times over, we figured out that the spays will cost $1195. We received a whooping $1340 in donations! I want to thank each and every one of you for all your donations and support! I am just in awe that all this money was raised in less than 2 days. From the bottom of my heart and all the ratties here at BFRR we thank you so much!

I promise to keep everyone updated as to how all the ratties from that rescue are doing! Again thank you so much!
