The Rat Shack is mainly a rescue forum, our goal is to help rats (and other animals) find a good home. There have been instances where someone has posted on Kijiji/Craiglist about having a rat up for adoption and after getting many responses, has decided to have a bidding war. We do know that in both cases members of the Shack have contacted the owner, but whether it's due to the members or just general response to the ad from other people we are not sure.

Seeing as our main goal is to find a good home and in many cases for little to no expense it was thought that to avoid this problem in the future that we set up guidelines to follow when an ad has been placed on kijiji or on the forum.

If you find an ad that you want to post on the forum, please do so. If you are going to contact the owner state that you are going to do that and keep everyone up to date of the status of the situation. If you see an ad on the forum, and no one has responded to the owner post that you will contact the owner and do so, again keep everyone up to date. If you see a rat on the forum that you'd like, and someone has responded please post your interest in the rat(s) available in the thread. If you wish to help, or see if any help is needed, contact the person who has responded via the thread or private message to see if any help is needed.

This is only to avoid a bidding war or problems in the future. This is not to 'take away' rats from anyone. More often then not it's a rescue that has replied or someone willing to help.

ETA: Woops, I accidentally posted in the Ontario section instead of the Maritime one.

OMG, a bidding war? Do you mean for money? Or just confusion about who is doing what?

Yes, you are right that we need to be careful about this. There was a recent rescue in which the rats' owner must have felt confused because there were at least three or four of us emailing her at one point. We risked accidentally doing more harm than good, although that particular situation turned out OK.
